There were shops in Seoul selling rolls of narrow, extremely crisp ramie fabric that is used for summer hanbok and pojagi. All colors.

I bought some to make placemats.

Hi Cindy! I graduated with you back in 67 and just saw your blog. What an interesting life you have! I moved to Colorado back in the 70's and never returned to Vineland (except to visit family). My two sisters still live in NJ and my brother resides in Philly. My mom used to say that I was the only one "to get away."
Best wishes!

Kudos on the right to left reading. I see so many Hankos backwards, reading left to right like English. A mistake I almost did when I carved my own!

It was your name, Dancing on temple tops, that drew me to your blog! and I love how your first post is a reflection on your life up to the starting point for your blog.

I'm getting ready to start a blog of my own and thought I would see who has gone before, to get an idea of how to stay true to myself while speaking in a public arena.

I look forward to reading about your journey!
warm regards,
Nancy

At a craft fair in Kyoto a the Nijo palace a little over a year ago, I purchased a silk scarf dyed with cedar. The lady in the booth tried to explain how it was done, but I do not speak Japanese and we both finally laughed at our frustration together. Now I understand what she was trying to tell me and my scarf if even more precious!
Thank you.

Thank you for your fascinating and informative blog! I stumbled on it while looking for Japanese sewing boxes and now am reading through your archives like a chid in a candy shop!
I have been to Japan twice and fell in love with Kyoto. My husband and I sometimes just look at each other here in N. California, and remark, "Why are we here!", here being not Kyoto.
Yours truly,
Kathi Sorensen

I'm sorry I can't answer that question. I just don't know which temples there might have been on the north east coast. Obviously the tsunami would have wiped them out. But please understand that as horrible as the pictures are on TV, only a small part of Japan was destroyed. In Kyoto where I live, there are thousands of beautiful temples. They are all still here, Kyoto was untouched by this disaster. And the same is true throughout Kansai and other areas outside the disaster zone.
